COVID-19 TEMPORARY OPERATING PROCEDURES EFFECTIVE MAY 21, 2020
Beginning on May 21, 2020, the Cowlitz Public Shooting Range will reopen on a limited basis with special hours and procedures due to the Washington COVID-19 Phased Reopening conditions. These procedures will apply until further notice, but probably at least until the middle of June.
HOURS OF OPERATION: The range will be open on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, from Noon to 5:00 p.m. ONLY.
RANGE FACILITIES AVAILABLE: The Rifle/Pistol range will be open and subject to special operating conditions. The trap range will remain closed until further notice due to staffing limitations.
APPOINTMENT ONLY: In order to avoid crowding, range use will be by APPOINTMENT ONLY.
Requests to use the range must be made by calling the range telephone number between 11:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on the days of operation.
Appointments may be made for the same day or the following day only.
Requests for appointments beyond the next day will not be accepted. The range telephone number is 360-229-7926.
Shooters must select either a rifle or pistol position at the time of making the appointment.
Position changing during the appointment period will not be permitted.
Persons arriving without a scheduled appointment will be treated as though they are calling and may be given an appointment period if one is available.
TWO PERSON GROUP LIMIT: Appointments will be limited to no more than two people per appointment slot in order to maintain a maximum of two persons per station in the shooting building. We will not pair up shooters who do not arrive together.
ARRIVAL TIME: Please do not arrive more than 30 minutes before your appointment time. If you have an appointment time, please be prompt or your slot may be given to someone else.
ARRIVAL & CHECK-IN PROCEDURE: Upon arrival for your scheduled shooting appointment, check-in will be done at the education building – do NOT go directly to the
There will be an RSO assigned to the education building to handle all check-ins, paperwork, fee payment, etc.
Shooters will then remain at the education building or outside until their shooting appointment time begins.
They will then be called to enter the shooting shed. DO NOT ENTER THE SHOOTING SHED UNTIL YOU ARE CALLED TO DO SO.
No guns are allowed in the education building.
RANGE OPERATING PERIODS: The range will have three 90-minute operating periods daily: 12:30-2:00, 2:00-3:30 and 3:30-5:00. Appointments may be made for ONE operating period per day.
If space is available and there are no conflicting scheduled appointments or other shooters waiting, the shooting period may be extended at the discretion of the RSO staff on duty.
HOT/COLD RANGE PERIODS: The range will operate on timed periods of hot/cold range during each shooting period. 20 minutes hot/10 minutes cold range. This should allow for three hot range sessions during each appointment period.
SHOOTER SPACING PROCEDURE: During this time of special operation, range capacity will be limited. Half of the rifle shooting positions will be closed, providing separation by having an unused position between each of the rifle positions in use. On the pistol side there will be one closed position between each position in use. The maximum number of shooters per position is two.
SAFETY PROCEDURES: All of the usual safety procedures remain in effect. Please review them before your shooting appointment. They are posted on the range website –
www.cowlitzshootingrange.com and posted on the kiosk in the parking lot.
TEMPORARY FEE POLICY: During this period of limited use, the daily shooting fee will be $6.00 per person for ages 13 and up. Children 12 and younger will continue to be free. Annual range pass holders whose pass shows an expiration date of March 1, 2020, or later will not be charged. If the pass expiration date is before March 1, 2020, they will be charged the temporary daily fee. No passes will be sold during this temporary operating period. An accommodation will be made at a later time to those pass holders whose passes remained valid during the period of range closure, preventing them from using the pass.
SANITATION MEASURES: The shooting positions, restrooms and commonly touched areas will be sanitized daily prior to opening and between shooting appointment periods. Facial masks and other PPE are recommended for range users, but will not be provided by the range – bring your own. Hand sanitizer will be available. Frequent hand washing at the restroom facility is encouraged. Every effort will be made to ensure that the appropriate six-foot social distancing standard is observed and maintained.
TRAFFIC FLOW MANAGEMENT: At the education building, entry will be made through the main door adjacent to the parking lot. Exit will be via the side door by the restrooms. Entry and exit from the shooting shed will be as marked by the doors.
